Men's counseling in Charlottesville, VA

A straightforward, results-oriented counseling experience for men who are ready to do the real work — led by Ruel Tyer, PhD, LPC, a Licensed Professional Counselor with a doctorate from the University of Virginia. Available in-person in Charlottesville and via telehealth throughout Virginia.

Counseling built around one goal: making myself irrelevant

My job is to work myself out of a job.
— Ruel Tyer

Dr. Tyer's approach to counseling is built on a simple but countercultural idea — the goal isn't for you to need counseling forever. It's to help you understand yourself deeply enough that you can draw on your own strengths, lean into the people around you, and — for those whose faith matters to them — draw from it as a source of genuine resilience.

Real progress in counseling isn't measured by what happens in the session. It's measured by what you're doing between sessions — the insights you're applying, the habits you're building, and the relationships you're investing in. That's what lasting change looks like.

What brings men to counseling

Dr. Tyer works with men navigating some of the issues that are hardest to talk about — including:

  • Breaking cycles of compulsive behavior and understanding the emotional needs driving them.

  • Learning to process and respond to difficult emotions rather than avoid, suppress, or be controlled by them.

  • Understanding the "why" behind patterns, reactions, and struggles — not just managing symptoms.

  • Practical, evidence-based support for men experiencing anxiety, low mood, or emotional exhaustion.

  • Processing loss — of a person, a relationship, an identity, or a season of life.

  • Navigating major changes — career shifts, relationship challenges, fatherhood, midlife, and more.

Clinical approach

Dr. Tyer primarily uses two evidence-based therapeutic models particularly well-suited to deep, root-level work:

Internal Family Systems (IFS) A powerful model for understanding the different "parts" of yourself — including the ones driving behaviors you can't seem to change.

Narrative Therapy Helps you examine the stories you've been told — and the ones you tell yourself — and rewrite the ones that are holding you back.

For men of Christian faith, these approaches integrate naturally with Biblical truth. Faith integration is always client-led — never assumed or imposed.
